Great Inventors

Here is some information on the great inventors without whose contributions we would not be where we are today:

Louis Pasteur (1822-1895): He was a French chemist and microbiologist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization.

Nobin Chandra Das (1845-1925): Indian sweet maker who is created the iconic Bengali sweetmeat “Rossogolla”/"Rasgulla”. Das invented a novel method of processing the chhana in boiling sugar syrup in his sweet shop located at Sutanuti (present-day Baghbazar).

Coenraad Johannes van Houten (1801-1887): Dutch chemist and chocolate maker known for the treatment of cocoa mass with alkaline salts to remove the bitter taste and make cocoa solids more water-soluble; the resulting product is still called "Dutch process" chocolate. He is also credited with introducing a method for pressing the fat (cocoa butter) from roasted cocoa beans, though this was in fact his father's invention.

Nicolas Appert (1749-1841): He was the French inventor of air tight food preservation. In honor of Appert, canning is sometimes called "appertisation".

Peter Durand (1766-1822):  He was a British merchant who invented preservation of food using tin cans.

William Lyman (1821-1991): American inventor who invented first rotating wheel can opener in 1870.

Gustav de Laval (1845-1913):  Swedish engineer who invented the milk separator and the milking machine. However, the company he founded marketed the first commercially practical milking machine in the year 1918 after his death.

Nancy Johnson: Invented the hand cranked ice cream freezer in 1843.

Robert Green: Inventor of ice cream soda in 1874.

The traditional story is that, on a particularly hot day, Mr. Green ran out of cold ice for the flavored sodas he was selling and used vanilla ice cream from a neighboring vendor, thus inventing a new drink.

Italo Marchiony (1868-1954): Invented ice cream cones.

Marchiony always insisted that he had been making cones since 1896 where he sold his homemade ice cream (lemon ice) from a pushcart (hokey-pokey) on Wall Street in New York.

Élie Metchnikoff (1845-1916): Ukrainian zoologist introduced the concept of “Probiotic”. He suggested "the dependence of the intestinal microbes on the food makes it possible to adopt measures to modify the flora in our bodies and to replace the harmful microbes by useful microbes".

Minoru Shirota (1899-1982): Japanese microbiologist who invented Yakult, the yogurt-like probiotic drink containing Lactobacillus casei strain shirota.

Gail Borden (1801–1874): Invented condensed milk produced under vacuum in 1853. However his patent was granted in the year 1856.
